A Man's Aspiration | Chí Làm Trai

Author: Nguyễn Công Trứ | Fayland Duet Rendition
The earth and sky stretch far and wide,
Debts of daring deeds, borrowed and repaid.
A man’s aspiration — to use his might and talents
Across the four seas, under earth and heaven.
Since ancient times, who has ever escaped death?
Let my loyal heart shine upon the pages of history.
Who can be certain of glory or shame?
Not many can recognize a hero before his time.
There are moments when storms gather, waves crash,
Determined to steer the ship through raging winds.
The will is set on moving mountains and filling rivers,
To make the hero’s name known far and wide.
The path to glory is broad and wide for one to tread.
When debts of daring deeds have been repaid,
Clap and cheer, clap and cheer.
Then — at last — a life of leisure,
A pocket of verse, a gourd of wine…
A pocket of verse, a gourd of wine…
… debt-free, debt-free…
… a life of leisurely ease, a life of leisurely ease…

Original poem:
